Annual Dues Explainer

What started with just a couple of riding buddies looking for an outdoor outlet during the pandemic has grown into an entire community who all share a common passion — a love for cycling. The growth of ABC has been significant, and the club has evolved in a way we never imagined.

That evolution has introduced a few hurdles, which we are on the path to overcoming.

We are in the process of forming a nonprofit organization with 501c3 tax-exempt status. Our mission is to create a community-first cycling and social club. Our club is a safe, inclusive space for cyclists of all abilities, ages, genders, and body types, and our focus is on community building, physical and mental well-being, and cycling advocacy.

By formally incorporating Avenues Bicycle Club, we hope to continue to grow the ABC community, while also protecting those who ride with us at our group rides, meetups, and events. We hope to partner with other cycling organizations to make an even larger impact within the cycling community.

As part of this transition, we are introducing suggested member dues of $50/year and requiring riders to sign electronic waivers. Notice the dues are “suggested.” If you engage with the ABC Community, find value from it, and have the means to pay our small annual dues amount, we’d appreciate it. Your dues allow us to continue to execute the ABC mission, as well as help to offset the club’s many hard costs (liability insurance, USA Cycling membership, entity formation fees, website maintenance & hosting, etc.). Any labor and time by club management is strictly on a volunteer basis without compensation.

Our dues structure likely won't cover all of our costs, especially this first year with the nonprofit filing. We would more than welcome dues in excess of the suggested $50 and/or donations, which will be tax deductible once our nonprofit is approved. Ideally, we'll seek out grants, sponsors, and/or donors to bridge that budget shortfall.

All that said, we'd never want to exclude anyone from ABC for financial reasons. Dues truly are suggested. The continued growth of our community and the resulting friendships are what matter to us. Come on out, wear a helmet (required), and sign the electronic waiver.

As part of your annual suggested dues, we promise the following to you:

  • 25 Thursday Night Group Rides per year with varying routes, profiles, difficulties, and pace, all of which are community-focused and welcoming

  • 25 Weekday Meetup Rides per year, with varying routes, profiles, difficulties, and pace, all of which are community-focused and welcoming

  • 3 Signature Events per year (think Grassy Knoll PR Day, City Creek Send, Tour de Shirt, Snēk Night, Chamois Butt’r Night, RoHa Night, East Bench Composites Ride & Shop Tour, or the ABC Holiday Party)

  • Access to our Slack Channel where you can coordinate weekend riding plans with others, discuss race calendars, swap gear, etc. (we currently have 150 members on Slack and the post volume/engagement is pretty high during the season, providing lots of ways to get engaged)

  • 1 Spring Trip per year (think Gravel Camp, where the club arranges lodging, itinerary, routes, food, etc.)

  • 1 Event Trips per year (think SBT GRV with the club arranging lodging, itinerary, routes, food, etc.)

  • Access to ABC kit orders at special custom pricing through Giordana (at least one order per year) and ABC casual-wear clothing and accessories (once per year)

  • Access to our sponsor discount codes and list (currently included: Chamois Butt’r, Party Shirt International, Snēk, Giordana, Contender Bicycles, and First Endurance)

We hope you are as excited about the direction of the club as we are. We look forward to the continued growth of ABC, as well as the opportunity to make a significant positive impact within the broader cycling community here in Utah.
